Keshi won’t improve on fortunes of Super Eagles –Poll

Keshi won’t improve on fortunes of Super Eagles –Poll

Stephen Keshi
Nigerians have said the reinstatement of Stephen Keshi as the coach of the Super Eagles will not improve the fortunes of the country’s senior national football team, the Super Eagles.
This is the outcome of a poll conducted by PUNCH Online, where readers were asked to vote with a question: Do you think the reinstatement of Stephen Keshi as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles will bring positive results to the team?
The participants were asked to vote ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
The profile of the Super Eagles has nosedived in recent months, reaching the lowest ebb on November 15, when the reigning African champions were knocked out of the race to defend their title at the 2015 African Cup of Nations, holding in Equatorial Guinea, by South Africa.
The Eagles held the Bafana Bafana of South Africa to an unimpressive 2-2 draw at the last group qualifying tie at the new Akwa Ibom International Stadium, Uyo, when the team needed a win to pick the second qualifying spot in the group.
In the poll, which opened on November 4 and closed on Thursday, November 27, 2014, 1,099 readers voted.
Six hundred and thirty one of them, representing 57 per cent of the participants believe that Keshi, who had initially been booted out of the team as the head coach by the Nigerian Football Federation after the Eagles matches against Sudan, will not be able to improve on the fortunes of the senior national team.
On the other hand, 468 of the participants, representing 43 per cent of the poll votes, back Keshi to continue as the coach of the Super Eagles, believing that the coach will bring positive results the national team.
President Goodluck Jonathan was believed to have ordered the NFF to reinstate Keshi after the football federation sacked the former Super Eagles captain, due to its belief that the continued stay of the tactician as head coach of the team would not take the Eagles to the next level.
The NFF asked the Head of its Technical Department, Shuaibu Ahmadu, to guide the team through the remaining two AFCON qualifying matches with Congo and South Africa.
Managing to secure a 2-0 away win over the Congolese boosted the chances of the Super Eagles to secure a home win against the Bafana Bafana, in a match the Nigerians needed a win to scale through to the AFCON finals in 2015.
Experts have consistently blamed Keshi for the failure of the team to put up an impressive showing in Super Eagles outings since winning the AFCON title in South Africa in 2013.

Presidential aspirants to sign undertaking -Odigie-Oyegun

Presidential aspirants to sign undertaking -Odigie-Oyegun

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has said all aspirants seeking the party’s Presidential ticket will have to sign an undertaking during screening.
He said this while receiving the completed presidential expression of interest and nomination forms from Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, at the party headquarters in Abuja, on Friday.
Odigie-Oyegun explained that all the aspirants are required to sign to faithfully implement the party’s manifesto from the day they assume office.
He enjoined Kwankwwaso like all other aspirants on the party’s platform, not to lose sight of the enormous challenges ahead.
Odigie-Oyegun said, “Now we are faced with real economic crisis to add to it all.  The APC is going to provide this nation with a steady hand, an experienced hand, a competent hand.
“Those of you who have indicated interest in this very onerous responsibility, what you are going to take over from the PDP, is a nation that is virtually pulled to pieces in every aspect of human life.
“I want to assure you that in my interaction with people is that we have people who will take this challenge head on, we have a manifesto which we are going to commit them to fatefully implementing.
“As a matter of fact, at the screening which we also mentioned there will be an undertaking to be signed, that the manifesto of the party will be faithfully implemented.”
He expressed confidence that the party’s manifesto which is people oriented will improve the lot of Nigerians if carefully and faithfully implemented.
The APC, he said, has what it takes to make Nigeria a better place for all.
Earlier, Kwankwaso, while presenting his forms, promised to return smiles to the face of Nigerians if given the chance.
He expressed sadness that Nigerians, especially in the North-East were forced to become internally displaced persons in their own country.
Kwankwaso dismissed fears that his aspiration would be a minus for the North-West because Maj. Gen. Buhari is also contesting.
He said, “I believe that Nigerians especially in my zone are happy. And I believe that at the end of the day, they will choose the right candidate.”

APC’s attack on Jonathan must stop – PDP

APC’s attack on Jonathan must stop – PDP

National Publicity Secretary, Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh
The Peoples Democratic Party said on Tuesday that it would no longer condone what it described as the deliberate, unwarranted and sustained vicious attacks on the person and office of President Goodluck Jonathan by the opposition, the All Progressives Congress.
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, who stated this in a statement on behalf of the party, insisted that the opposition must end the attack.
If the opposition refuses to heed his call, Metuh said the PDP would no longer fold its hands. He said the desperate desire of the APC for power unchains undisciplined impulses and actions, which was posing a threat to the very survival of democracy and the nation.
He said his party had been watching carefully as members of the APC, including its national officers, governors and presidential aspirants continued to castigate the president for no just cause.
He said, “The PDP has been watching carefully as the rank and file of the APC, the governors, party leaders, presidential hopefuls and even sidekicks run amok, competing in a heavily subjective castigation of President Goodluck Jonathan with incendiary utterances, signposting its plans for the dastardly when it loses in next year’s general elections.
“However, patriotism, the cardinal value of our great party, indeed, the price of our custodianship of the mandate of over 160 million Nigerians calls for vigilance, maturity and responsibility, hence our restraints in the face of the naked lies and recklessness of the APC.
“We had thought that the silver hair of its top leaders would caution the thoughtless delinquency of its youngsters. Unfortunately, the recklessness of the old is in competition with the imprudence of the young. What a shame the APC has turned!”
He called on the opposition to learn from its (PDP) political campaigns, which he said were issue-based, just as he advised the APC on the need to maintain political decorum and primacy of national interest in the build-up to the forthcoming elections.
Metuh however regretted that the APC had refused to shed its penchant for lies, deceit, propaganda, violence and blackmail as the centre piece of their agenda and message to Nigerians.

Emergency Extension: Military mounts pressure on

senate

ABUJA—THE Senate yesterday grilled the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Kenneth Minimah, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosun and The Director of Department of State Service, Mr. Ekpenyong Ita for eight hours over the security situation in the North.
The senate also disclosed that the Nigeria military was mounting pressure on them for the extension of emergency rule in the three North Eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe for them to be able to conduct operations in a manner that will bring insurgency to a quick resolution.
The red chambers failed to discuss President Goodluck Jonathan’s request for the extension of emergency rule in the affected states despite the fact that the emergency rule had expired Thursday last week.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Information, Media and Public Affairs, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who briefed newsmen after about eight hours closed-door session with the Service Chiefs, said that the Security heads insisted that the extension of emergency rule was necessary for the quick resolution of the insurgency in the affected states.
Senator Abaribe said that during the closed-door session, all the constraints the Nigerian military was facing towards bringing the insurgency to an end were deliberated as well as the military budgetary provisions.
According to him, “The senate in an executive session has spent more than eight hours interacting with the Chiefs of Staff of the Nigerian Armed Forces. The interaction was very frank and it was very detailed. We looked into what have been the constraints of the Nigerian Military in dealing with the insurgency; we also looked into the budgetary provisions for them and we looked into what has been done so far by the military in containing the insurgency.
“And I can tell you, the senate was very impressed with the response from the military and like I said, the military has shown itself to be capable of dealing with the insurgency. The fact that they are capable of dealing with the insurgency means that the senate will do all in its power to support the Nigeria military so that we can bring this insurgency to a quick resolution.
“We also found from their briefing that we have some problems which has to do with the troop levels and with the level of equipment and of course all the other ancillary problems where you have to fight what we call asymmetrical war and not a formal conflict.
“We are very glad that the military is at this moment, gearing up itself to be able to deal with this asymmetrical conflict in the North East of Nigeria. As of today, we have the briefing and we can reassure Nigerians that the military is up to the task of dealing with this matter.”
Commenting on the state of emergency, the senate spokesman said, “The question of the state of emergency was not what was on the table today and we are going to also wait until it is brought on the floor of the senate and we will now discuss it.
“What the senate did today was to separate the two questions. Of course the military continues to insist that they need the state of emergency to be able to conduct operations in a manner that will bring it to a quick resolution.
“When the senate now takes the question of state of emergency of course you will be there because it will be discussed in open plenary.

Why I won’t remarry — Bianca Ojukwu

Why I won’t remarry — Bianca Ojukwu

Bianca Ojukwu, is the widow of the late former Biafran leader,

Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, and Nigeria Ambassador to Spain. In this interview,

she reveals why she would not remarry.

Given that you are still very young, beautiful and as the famed American poet-Robert Frost said, you still have a long road to travel. Do you plan to remarry?
People marry I think not just because they need to come together, live together, raise family together, it is a rite of passage and I think I have fulfilled my part. Why I said that, is, I have gone through marriage, lived with what I consider a wonderful man who gave me 23 years of happiness, of fulfillment,  I literally felt I was the luckiest woman to have had a man who gave me utter dedication and, above all, wonderful children. So my pledge to him is that I will devote my life to taking care of our children, raising them properly, teaching them those ideals that he cherished and held very dear and trying to carry on his legacy. So I don’t have any compelling need to remarry and, in any case, my time is very limited; so I am trying to channel it properly towards raising my children.
How do you contain advances from men, who may nurse some romantic thoughts about you?
Amb. Bianca Ojukwu
Amb. Bianca Ojukwu
Nigerian men are not aggressive; they may be aggressive in business, in their career pursuits, but in that particular area of aggressively pursuing a romantic interest, I have been very impressed by the level of decency and decorum they project. I mean, it might be just my own experience. They have treated me with a lot of respect, deference-they have been protective in a way as if to say this is a treasure that we must protect. I get on flights, and I see people stand up, take my luggage to my car, they have been amazing. I haven’t encountered that sort of pursuit and I have been very touched and humbled by the way they have treated me.
My husband’s friends call me regularly to see how I am doing- I mean a lot of widows complain that that they have issues with people proposing to them. But in my own case, I must say that I have been lucky to have wonderful support system based on respect and a sense of protection. If that is a function of the respect they had for my husband, I don’t know.
When I travel abroad, I also meet Nigerian men who are respectful. I also believe that it also depends on the woman’s attitude-sometimes we lay blame at the doorstep of the men— but the fact is that if you are engaged in your work, if you are a woman who have a sense of purpose, regardless of the fact that you operate in a terrain that is dominated by men, once you can hold your own, it will be difficult to fall into that quagmire where you feel you are being propositioned or your gender is playing a derogatory role.
Once you are not making excuses for bad performance, or once you are not looking for a man to cover for you, for your inadequacies, once you are able to let you work speak for you, it’s a lot easier to survive and live a life of dignity, and once you don’t present yourself as a weak and defenseless woman- one to be pitied and really cuddled by a man just by a virtue of being of a weaker sex – then it’s much easier to live a life that is not being truncated  by those pressures.

2 female suicide bombers kill 67 in Borno market

MAIDUGURI — At least 67 people were feared dead and about 98 others seriously injured yesterday when two female suicide bombers hit a popular Monday market along One-Way Road, Chalarams, Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
boko-abducted-girlsOver 30 shops and 25 vehicles were also destroyed.
Unconfirmed report said one of the female suicide bombers was a mad woman suspected to have been used by terrorists, leaving over 16 people including the mad woman dead on the spot, while those who sustained injuries were rushed to University of Maiduguri and the State Specialists Hospital for treatment.
The incident which occurred at about 11am forced many traders, students and residents to close. The explosion occurred at a time Governor Kashim Shettima was having security meetings with security chiefs in the state.
This is the second most deadly attacks along Chalarams Road at Monday market. In 2011, some terrorists invaded the market road and killed over 10 traders.
Health worker, Dogara Shehu, said he counted more than “45 people killed, some of them completely decapitated” in the Maiduguri blasts in an account supported by another witness.
An official with National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that “many people have been killed” but did not have an official death toll.
“What we have is a case of suicide bombings involving two females,” said a senior security source in the city, who requested anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media.
The source told AFP that the “first bomber stood by a motorised rickshaw packed with goods in the bustling market and took a call on her mobile phone. She then dropped it (the mobile phone) and at that moment she blew herself up, so people thought the bomb was concealed in the rickshaw.
“About 10 minutes later, another woman who looked about 19 and carrying what looked like a baby on her back under hijab arrived at the scene that was crowded by rescuers and residents. She then detonated the bomb on her back.”
Witnesses’ accounts
An eye witness, who was among the lucky survivors, Mallam Ali Mohammed told Vanguard that “two female suicide bombers hit the vicinity of the busy Maiduguri market killing over 60 people.”
Another eye witness, who is a petty trader, Mallam Abba Usman said: “As I am talking to you now, we are still trying to rescue the injured and evacuate the corpses. I cannot give you a number yet but a lot of people died.”
He said it was also difficult to rescue people as the entire place has been cordoned off by the military, even as residents were asking the soldiers to leave the place as they had failed to protect lives and property in the state.
A member of the civilian JTF vigilante who does not want his name in print said that “one of the female attackers kept a parcel in one of the shops on One-way, a commercial area beside the popular Monday Market, telling the traders that she had something to pick from the market, while the package detonated few minutes later.
“And as people were still wondering what was happening and were trying to rescue the injured, another woman in the same area detonated a bomb planted on her, which claimed so many lives.
A trader, Amadi Nuhu, who spoke to our correspondent said: “They were two suicide bombers. The first detonated herself, killing many people and as people were running for their lives, the other bomber detonated her own, killing many more. I don’t know how many people were killed but about 14 Keke Napep (Jega) evacuated corpses to the specialists hospital.”
According to Nuhu, most of the traders along the axis where the suicide bombers attacked were killed in the explosion, with many more who came to the market for business.

35 corpses at specialists hospital

At the state specialists hospital in Maiduguri, our correspondent gathered that, so far 35 corpses were brought to the hospital from the scene of the explosion while other dead bodies were taken to University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
A staff of the hospital who did not want his name mentioned said, dead bodies were still being evacuated from the scene of the bomb blasts with hundreds more that were injured.
Confirming the twin bomb blasts, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Gideon Jibril said “whatever figure you heard from the hospital sources are their own figure, but as you know we are still evacuating corpses. We have not yet started counting the corpses. This is a sad situation, I will update you whenever we were able to clear the scene and I have the casualty figure.”
Gusau tasks Lake Chad Basin countries on menace
Meanwhile, the Minister of Defence, Lt-.Gen. Aliyu Gusau (rtd), yesterday urged countries in the Lake Chad Basin to urgently work together to curb the menace of terrorism threatening the sub-region.
Gusau spoke at the 4th Meeting of Ministers of Defence, Chiefs of Defence Staff and Heads of Intelligence and Security Services of the member states of Lake Chad Basin Commission, LCBC, and Benin Republic.
Represented by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, Gusau said the global security threat was high.
According to him, “an extension of it is seen and felt in our region by the dastardly act of Boko Haram. This had led to instability, underdevelopment and untold hardship to citizens. In this regard, we continue to condemn the reprehensible and atrocious activities of Boko Haram in our countries.
“This, therefore, brings to the fore the urgent need for close collaboration between us to curb this menace. We must therefore be resolute, focused determined and cohesive in our response to this threat or it will consume us all.”

INVASION OF APC DATA OFFICE:Jonathan bent

on pushing Nigeria towards anarchy —Buhari

LAGOS — ALL Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant, General Muhammadu Buhari has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of being determined to push Nigeria into anarchy in the shortest possible time.
CPC Presidential candidate, Gen. Buhari
Gen. Buhari
Reacting to the recent invasion of the APC Data Centre in Lagos by security operatives, Buhari alleged that the Jonathan presidency had “mastered the art of how to push a nation into chaos within the shortest time possible.”
Also, the APC leadership likened last week’s police invasion of the National Assembly to a coup.
The party, however, called for an independent inquiry to determine who ordered the invasion and for what purpose “with a view to preventing a recurrence and also meting out the necessary punishment to those behind it.”
In a statement made available to Vanguard, Buhari, who decried the invasion of the party’s data centre said “the desperation of the PDP grows by the hour.”
Condemning the abuse of power, he said there was an attempt by the Jonathan administration to level the opposition.
The former Head of State said “almost everyday, the Jonathan presidency seems intent on demonstrating for all to see that they have mastered the art of how to push a nation into chaos within the shortest time possible.
“The early morning attack by security operatives on the APC data centre in Lagos on Saturday, November 22 is one such display in a growing chain of abuse and violation of the constitution and political rights of the people. It is a reckless act that must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.”
Faulting the invasion, he said the Jonathan government could not claim ignorance, adding: “The security operatives conducting this illegal raid must have been ordered from Abuja. They would not have done what they did unless given the mandate from their high bosses in Abuja.
“Attempting to defend the indefensible, they fabricate a story that the attack was necessary because criminal activity was taking place at the centre. These statements are such plain lies.”
Besides, the presidential hopeful expressed worry that “these acts are but a foretaste of things to come. From these attacks, this government is signalling to the Nigerian people they have no intention of holding anything resembling free and fair elections. Their goal is not to create a level electoral playing field. Their goal is to level the opposition into the dust through the abuse of federal power.”
Police invasion of NASS a coup —APC
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said using weapons to attack an arm of government and preventing it from carrying out its functions are tantamount to a coup, adding that the tear gas that was fired into the National Assembly by an invading force of policemen is a chemical weapon.
It said: “We are demanding the independent inquiry in view of the seriousness of the armed attack on the National Assembly and the danger it poses to our democracy. We are also alerting the international community to the happenings in Nigeria and urging them to show interest because of their investment in the country’s democracy.”
The party said denial by the Presidency of its involvement in the “senseless attack” is not enough to stop the finger-pointing at it (Presidency), “especially because no one, not even the Inspector General of Police, will have the temerity to stop the nation’s number four citizen from entering the National Assembly without an express order from the President.”
According to the party, “this is why we have continuously held the President responsible for last week’s show of shame,” noting that the IG is just a tool in the hands of a President that has perhaps done more than any other President before him to truncate the nation’s democracy.”

Why Jonathan deserves second term – Onuoha

Why Jonathan deserves second term – Onuoha

Chief David Ogba Onuoha is the Chairman of Bourdex Group and a prominent member of Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in Abia State. In this interview with Snr. Correspondent, Ben Duru, he takes a holistic look on politics in Nigeria, saying that the challenges in the country were not insurmountable and that they could be addressed through collaboration between the executive and the legislature. He spoke on other issues. Excerpts:
Where would you class President Goodluck Jonathan’s performance against the background of his rumoured interest in another term?
Despite the different shades of opinion that may exist, many Nigerians will agree that our President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, came to the helm of affairs of this nation at a very trying period of our history. At a time when the major resource of our national economy – oil, was experiencing a decline in the global market as a result of growing discovery of alternatives to crude petroleum, especially oil shale or oil sand, biofuels, solar energy, and the emergence of new oil producers, even in our continent. There was also the high point of violent politics and deepening security challenges, including terrorism, which disrupted the economy and sometimes reducing the harnessing of our crude oil production. All these were further exacerbated by the conflicts of leadership transition and the need for the deepening of our nascent democracy from the wounds inflicted on it by advocates of third term presidency. The era increased the mutual suspicions that have remained endemic in our political system. It equally led to the rise in security issues and spending in the midst of a heightened level of competition in addressing the many challenges of the nation. But President Jonathan’s presidency appeared to have thrived in the midst of these daunting challenges. He has shown enormous resilience, courage and initiatives in not only keeping the nation united, but in ensuring that the interests of many Nigerians at all levels and from all regions are considered in dispensing the available dividends of democracy. Today, more than ever before, many segments of our checkered nation feel a greater sense of belonging in the Nigerian enterprise. Today, the President’s security thrust is gaining momentum in the many conflict areas, including the Boko-Haram strongholds, just as his policies of re-integrating the deviants, whether in the terrorist enclaves or in the South-South oil areas, are gaining greater acceptance. The President’s transformation agenda in all sectors of our economy is making impacts, especially in the agricultural sector, where he is bent on charting a new wealth builder for the whole nation to support our dwindling oil sector. He has looked to the future to encourage greater savings through the sovereign wealth fund and he is showing greater interests in all regions of the nation, especially the South-East region, which was obviously marginalized in the past. For the first time in the history of Nigeria after the civil war, the South-East region has been made by President Jonathan to feel a sense of re-absorption in the Nigerian space, with its airways, road networks, the Niger Bridge and other infrastructural considerations now being addressed. Also for the first time in the post-civil war era, Ndi-Igbo are being fully recognized and given a chance to serve the nation they love passionately, in key military and national economic positions previously seen as out of their reach. These are worthy achievements for which President Jonathan must be commended. I am confident that for his resilience under fire and determination to deliver a new Nigeria for all of us, he merits a second term to complete his good works. Needless to say that this is also his constitutional right to contest and no form of intimidation and unsavory prompting of the scheming opposition and their cohorts should deny him that chance. When the time comes I am sure that Ndi-Igbo, the South-East Region and many other Nigerians who have enjoyed his legacies, will once more solidly queue behind President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid to return to Aso Rock. It is my hope to be there to support him all the way towards that goal.
Fashioning out a durable constitution remains a recurrent challenge to Nigeria; considering the proposed national dialogue, what could be the best approach to ensuring a stable polity?
The problem of nation building throughout history has never been a turn-key project. And this has been most evident in the challenge of fashioning out a durable constitution that would guide and project the affairs of the people. If there is one single element that can facilitate the process of achieving a durable constitution, it lies in the ‘ownership-process’. That is to say, that a durable constitution must truly reflect the wishes of the people on the nature of the association they wish to be regarded as a part of, and how that association is governed to reflect and include their interests. We can agree that past Nigerian constitutions, both pioneered by the military and civilian governments, have been delivered as top-down documents that did not clearly reflect the interests of the component entities that make up the Nigerian Union. No wonder that the implementations of such documents fell short of the expectations of many Nigerians. This is so evident in the many calls for a sovereign or national conference to resolve the issues, even under a democratic representative dispensation. The current dialogue proposed by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is a right response to an ailing problem. For me, this is the right and first step to building a durable constitution and a stable polity for the Nation. This dialogue deserves the support of every Nigerian, and we should be patient to see what it throws up, whether a referendum or any other form of adoption, so long as it can be seen to reflect the genuine wishes of Nigerians.
How can the recurrent Executive-Legislature frictions be contained?
In the past five decades, our country has worked very hard to enrich our journey from military dictatorship to elected democratic governance. Without any equivocations, today we have visible signs of a well-defined executive institution and legislative organs of governance as clear symbols of our democracy. What you describe as the schisms that slow down governance, are nothing but the symbols of democracy and the functioning of the delineations of functions, at play. Sometimes, these processes may be overstretched by the individual actors, but they should never be dragged to a point where adequate cordial relationship between the executive and the legislature is permanently impaired. The doctrine of the separation of powers was never meant to be a state of absolute independence from each other, but as a check and balance to each other. That is why the 1999 Constitution provided and outlined the functions of each arm of governance – Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary – so that they provide inherent checks and balances to moderate each other and avoid over-stepping of functions that can impede the governance process. However, we must be aware that these checks and balances sometimes generate frictions of their own between the various organs. But this should be to the strengthening of the system rather than a complete slowdown of the process of governance. In fact, how the Executive and the Legislature manage their frictions should themselves be a test of the durability of our democracy. They should not be seen as being in a contest of supremacy or truncating the very essence of good governance service delivery to the citizenry. We can contain the Executive-Legislative schisms in Nigeria’s governance process, when the various organs avoid over-stepping in the constitutional functions of the other. There should be more negotiation and collaboration in any grey areas of functions. The aim of improving service to Nigerian citizens should be the major focus. Some major areas where there have been conflicts between the Executive and the Legislature in Nigeria are in the budgeting process, in areas of security, and in the passage of specific bills that affect the nation such as in corruption. In such areas, the various organs of governance need not see their functions as just parallel to each other, but they must collaborate to serve the nation better, otherwise, peace, security and good governance will be impaired. I cannot fail to mention that Abia State under His Excellency, Chief T.A. Orji (Ochendo), has provided a perfect example of the nature of collaboration that can be expected between the Executive and the Legislature. He has also shown results that collaboration is so evident in the peace, security and prosperity that reign in the State. These results did not come without some efforts and sacrifices. The Governor merely governs the state without hidden agenda and does not over-step his functions, hence it is easy to see the State Legislature collaborating with the Executive in matters of governance. The citizens of Abia are the real gainers.
The fear of impeachment disposes state governors to field upstarts for state assemblies; how could the electoral system be made more open and encouraging for popular participation?
While the conditions that promote impeachments in the state assemblies still persist, you will agree with me that it is now on the decline in our national and State politics in the past five years. This is one obvious sign of the deepening of democracy in our growing experience. Also in decline is the prevalent issue of god-fathers, who at some points in time where obviously out there dictating who participates in the political process and who should not. Whenever and wherever the situation prevails so that the state executive can wield the big stick and extensively encroach on the powers of the state assemblies, or even brood hidden agenda, some level of Assembly insurrection is bound to arise. As the State legislators begin to free themselves from the shackles of their executive governors, impeachments and counter-impeachments become the new imperatives. We can see a typical example in this issue by referring to the case of Abia State before the government of Chief T. A. Orji (Ochendo) as Governor of Abia State. Under the previous Governor, for his eight years in office, there was constant scheming for impeachment and counter impeachments of Speakers and the Governor. One reason was the existent impunity of governance and the tendency to dominate the political process as god-father. But with the governance of T.A. Orji, the polity has been very stable. He did this magic by first uniting the political elites including my good-self, by rejecting the impunities of past government, jettisoning god-fatherism and the dominance of the politics of the State by one man and one family, and most of all, opening the political system for the participation of all citizens and deepening democracy, without the usual recourse to vile oaths of allegiance. These are sure antidotes that limit the dangerous scheming that lead to impeachments. I recommend the Abia approach to other states across the nation, so that democracy can take firm root in our States, and candidates begin to secure the rights to seek for elections in political positions because they are qualified and confident to serve, and not because some god-father is running them from behind. This will be to the advantage of both Governors and the House of Assembly members, who arrive their offices through securing the nod of ward and local government area congresses, and therefore have the capacity to pursue and reflect the opinions and interests of their constituencies, their State and LGAs. In direct essence, the panacea to elimination of the impeachment saga and the opening up of the electoral process, lies not in the whims and caprices of State Governors but in the leveling of the political field for inclusive participation and in the improvement of our electoral process at all levels.
Internal democracy is an issue in Nigeria’s political parties; can it be achieved?
Internal democracy at the political party level aims at developing the party machinery so that it becomes a more democratic, transparent and an effective party System that will satisfy the hallmark of democratic governance. The areas of specific focus of internal party democracy include candidates’ selection, leadership selection, policy making, membership relations, gender, minorities, youth and party funding. It is only where these issues are properly addressed to the interests of the party members that a political party can function optimally and gain the advantage of securing and retaining power. Many of our political parties in the nation are still grappling with the acceptable conditions for internal democracy, but the most easily discussed infractions occur at the areas of candidates and leadership selections. This occurs when those that are capable of standing elections and holding leadership positions – even with the support of their constituencies, are passed over, while others that do not meet these criteria are foisted as leaders and representatives of their people. While it is admitted that the political parties recruit their membership from those that reflect the programmes and views of the party on the one hand and all those that are members of the party have the opportunity to field themselves for the party’s consideration on the other hand, there are two ways of advancing the traffic. My view is that anyone that aspires to represent the party as leader or candidate, apart from being a member, must primarily embody the aspirations of the political party they wish to represent. One cannot be disloyal to the party, fighting to disrupt its organizations or subverting its interests, – and at the same time aspiring to lead or represent the party in any form. Such is very opportunistic, and often evident in the many crises of internal democracy we find in Nigeria’s political system. The extent we remedy these will ensure the extent that internal democracy thrives in our party politics. Internal democracy is therefore possible where party loyalty exists, and where those intending to lead or contest elections within the party, value the party, projects its interests and have the support of their constituencies. These considerations should rise above parochial interests, since the success of those who contest within the party for political power or those given the opportunity to lead, hold their positions in trust for the party they belong to and to the voters that have elected them to offices. I am aware that this is partly the problem that our President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, and the PDP leadership have been contesting with those who do not just want to disrupt the party and demonize it, but also what to lead it, while holding loyalties to other political parties. This is highly unacceptable for any democratic system.
I am confident that for his resilience under fire and determination to deliver a new Nigeria for all of us, he merits a second term to complete his good works. Needless to say that it is also his constitutional right to contest and no form of intimidation and unsavory prompting of the scheming opposition and their cohorts should deny him that chance.

Diver Encounters Giant 20-Foot Anaconda

Green Anaconda in Brazil
While diving deep within the rivers of the Brazilian rain forest, wildlife expert Franco Banfi encountered a huge anaconda that would have sent your average diver swimming for the shore.
The massive green anaconda was estimated by some to be 26 foot long…which if that’s true… that would make it one of the biggest snakes in the world as the Guinness book of records has the world’s longest snake in captivity at 25 feet. (both videos below)

ABUJA (Federal Ministry of Power Report) - The Minister of State for Power, Mohammed Wakil has affirmed during the reviewed of development in the power sector in 2014 that the power sector reform under President Goodluck Jonathan is a huge success considering what the administration inherited from previous administrations.

He stated this when he delivered a speech at the 2014 Ministerial Press Briefing held by the Minister of Power in Abuja lately. The Minister added that after long hours of stagnation, the power sector is now set for unprecedented growth, indicating that the Jonathan administration has set an unbeatable record in the power sector. He further applauded the power sector reforms, noting that the fundamental framework for sustainable power supply has been laid out and the reform is now fine-tuning the teething problems that emerged from the exercise.

Mohammed Wakil informed that the administration has successfully privatized  the distribution and generation sub- sectors; adding that substantial investment is ongoing in the transmission sector to address decades of infrastructural neglect,  whilst private sector participation is being looked into.

“The power sector is undergoing a revolution under President Goodluck Jonathan. While we are not fully there, we have taken major steps towards sustainable electricity supply to our people. I appeal to Nigerians to exercise patience. Just as the nation is seeking to overcome teething problems in the telecom sector, so also are we to resolve the challenges arising from the power sector reform,” the Minister said.

Power Sector Reform: Minister unveils extraordinary accounts

Power Sector Reform: Minister unveils extraordinary accounts

ABUJA (Ministry of Power Report) - The Minister of Power, Chinedu Nebo (Professor) has on Monday November 24, 2014 at the 2014 Ministerial Platform held at the Radio House Auditorium in Abuja announced that the Power Sector has recorded a generation of between 4,000 and 4,500 megawatts consistently in the past 6 weeks.
The Minister during the event described the feat as an unprecedented achievement, attributing it to President Goodluck Jonathan's commitment to delivering on his mandate. He also recalled that before President Goodluck Jonathan was sworn in, everything was moribund the Vice President on assumption convinced the States to continue with the NIPP projects.
“Jonathan gave direction by launching a roadmap for power to heal the ailment of the power sector. The current move to put to good use already completed and commissioned gas-fired power plants across the country have been successful with concrete arrangements now in place to make gas speedily available to all the NIPP plants.”
While speaking on the exploits of renewable energy mix in the ‘Operation Light Up Rural Nigeria,’ he  acknowledged that it would take much longer to get every community connected to the national grid; saying giant steps have been taken by the present administration to provide electricity to rural Nigeria through the ongoing Operation Light Up Rural Nigeria (OLRN) Initiative. He explained that the OLRN initiative was conceptualized to enhance access to electricity across Nigeria by exploiting renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and biomass, among others.
Chinedu Nebo noted that President Jonathan commissioned these on January 13, 2014 at three rural communities - Durumi, Shape and Waru in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to flag- off the OLRN initiative. “Plans are fully underway to replicate the OLRN pilot programme across the 36 States of the federation. About 10 States are planning to declare light up operations in their respective States in line with the OLRN initiative and the Transformation Agenda of Nigerian President.
According to the Minister, the Nigerian Government has pursued vigorously the implementation of the generation, transmission, distribution and gas to power projects under the aegis of the National Integrated Power Projects. Adding, on activation, the nation stands to benefit from 10 new gas - fired power plants located at Alaoji (1131mw), Benin (508mw),Calabar (634mw), Egbema (381mw), Gbarain (254mw), Geregu 11 (506mw), Ogorode (508mw), Olorunsogu 11(754mw), Omoku (265mw) and Omotosho 11 (513mw). He further disclosed that negotiations are underway with other front runner IPPs such as the Zuma Energy (1200mw) coal in Kogi State; the gas project (400mw) of the gas - fired power plant in Egbema, Imo state as well as with  Century Power for a 495 mw gas - fired Power Plant in Okija, Anambra State.
Others revealed were: Exxon Mobil / MPN for a 100mw;  wind power plant in Maraban Pushit, Plateau State; Ikot  Abasi Power for a 250mw gas - fired power plant in Akwa Ibom State; the Omo Power (Geometric) for a 500mw gas - fired power plant in Osisioma, Abia State, among others. He also indicated that bankable feasibility studies have been concluded for 10 Dams for hydro - power generation and urged private companies to cue into the project and carry out their social corporate responsibility by supplying their host communities with electricity.
On Coal to Power, the Minister informed that the action plan for the actualization of coal - fired power plant has been developed by the Coal to Power Committee, the African Development Bank is providing credit support to NBET and  the Federal Ministry of Power in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development is currently developing bankable project documents towards facilitating investments in coal to power.
“Licenses have been given to real investors who are ready to do coal to power. It is with the insistence of steel and mine that we are synergizing with IPPs to actualize coal to power just as coal to fire the power is already being mined. President Jonathan has strengthened varied government power institutions including the National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC and has successfully handed over the Trading Point Meter to operation participants in readiness for the Transitional Electricity Market (TEM),” he said.
“Workshops for the training of participants on market rules, market procedures and market payment systems for efficient and all inclusive high quality performance have been organized. The Electricity Management Services Limited (EMSL) team was inaugurated on September 10, 2013 to carryout technical inspection and certification of all electrical materials, equipment and installations in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry. Inauguration of the National Council of Power (NACOP) followed suit on August 14, 2014.”
Nebo averred that the Transmission Company of Nigerian has done a lot because there was a lot of decay in the past. He added that the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) has been restructured with more technical departments added to the institute towards realization of the Transformation Agenda of the present administration. Also, the training of 7,400 personnel launched on November 6, 2014 under the National Power Sector Apprenticeship Scheme (NAPSAS) has commenced.
He warned that in regards to reports of epileptic power supply in some areas, including parts of the FCT, any disco that henceforth rejects the power sent to them will be dealt with; stating that if they do not change for better, NERC will be mandated to withdraw their licenses. He recommended the use of energy saving bulbs by all consumers, demanding DISCOs to upgrade transformer capacities whenever they embark on replacement of transformers as well as rectify, repair and replace aging transformers to guarantee adequate reception of power provided by GENCOs.
While commending the Katsina State Government for keying into the effort of the federal government to construct gas - fired power plants, he called on other States to engage in building power plants in a bid to facilitate power supply to their people. Chinedu Nebo noted that the transitional electricity market will be declared in the next six weeks and the Ministry will be convening a meeting with stakeholders to discuss this. He revealed that the Nigerian Government is targeting 20,000 megawatts by 2020, indicating that the Ministry will be working towards 75% coverage to make sure that no Nigerian community is under darkness.
