Abia Slashes Tuition Fees In ABSU

Abia State government has reduced by 20 percent tuition fees payable by students of Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) in response to the students’ demands and prevailing condition in similar institutions in the zone .
Announcing the reduction in a pre convocation press briefing in Uturu, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Mkpa Agu Mkpa who is a former vice chancellor of the university said Governor Theodore Orji slashed the fees to reduce the burden on parents especially with prevailing economic situation in the country.
With the reduction, ABSU students who at present pay N80, 000 for normal courses, N90,000 for professional courses and N100,000 for medicine will pay N64,000, N72,000 and N80,000 in that order.
The SSG said the governor took the decision “following the present economic crunch in the country occasioned by the oil prices in the international market, as a result of which students of ABSU and their parents are in great difficulty coping with the demands of their school fees in the institution”.
He said it was expected that students, staff and management of ABSU would “reciprocate the governor’s kindness by remaining disciplined and law abiding at all times”.
Fielding questions from reporters, the vice- chancellor, Prof. Chibuzor Ogbuagu, said there was no truth whatsoever in the rumour making the rounds that a certain governorship aspirant in the state paid one month salary arrears of staff of the institution, blaming mischief makers for the rumour.
He explained that one of the aspirants, Dr. Uche Ogah, had about three years ago, approached the management of the institution for a parcel of land to build an auditorium which he had since donated to the school. On the 23rd convocation ceremony of the institution, he disclosed that 5,076 graduands would receive first and 466 higher degrees.
He commended the reduction in fees even as he said the institution depended on fees collected from its students to augment the internally generated revenue profile of the institution. The ABSU VC noted that Governor Orji had always been responsive to the financial needs of the institution, citing the release of N1.9 billion within a short period which enabled the management to offset 11 months’ salary arrears that accumulated during the strike.
